Carly Simon revealed she has Parkinson's - she hid it for years - and the ONE line in her statement stopped me. A top Parkinson's researcher told me where this disease may actually be coming from… and it's not where you think.
Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Carly Simon revealed she's living with Parkinson's disease - and she described the hardest part of it isn't the tremors or stiffness most people expect. It's something invisible.
In this video I break down her story, then share the biggest takeaways from my long sit-down with Dr. Ray Dorsey, one of the world's leading Parkinson's researchers, on why Parkinson's is now the fastest-growing neurological disease in the world — and how much of it may actually be within our control.
Here's what surprised me: Parkinson's was never just a movement disorder. Non-motor symptoms like anxiety, depression, fatigue, apathy, sleep problems, and a fading sense of smell often show up years before the first tremor. And in the largest genetic study of its kind, only about 13% of people with Parkinson's carried a known gene — which raises the real question this video tries to answer: if it's not mostly in our DNA, where is it coming from?
We get into the emerging science that Parkinson's may begin outside the brain — in the gut or even the nose — and the three environmental exposures researchers keep coming back to: golf courses and pesticides (a May 2025 JAMA Network Open study found ~126% higher odds within a mile of a course), the weed killer paraquat (banned in 70+ countries), and the dry-cleaning solvent TCE (trichloroethylene), linked to a roughly 500% higher risk and to the water contamination at Camp Lejeune. As Michael J. Fox put it: "genetics loads the gun, environment pulls the trigger."
Much of this is emerging science and shows association, not proven cause, and none of this is medical advice. But I end with the hopeful part: the practical, low-cost steps anyone can take, and why this $82-billion-a-year disease matters for every family, whether or not Parkinson's has touched yours yet.

QUESTIONS THIS VIDEO ANSWERS
What did Carly Simon reveal about her health? She disclosed a Parkinson's disease diagnosis.
What are the early, non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's? Mood changes, anxiety, depression, fatigue, apathy, sleep trouble, and reduced sense of smell — often appearing years before tremors.
Is Parkinson's genetic or hereditary? For most people, no single inherited gene explains it — only ~13% carry a known Parkinson's gene in the largest study to date.
What environmental factors are linked to Parkinson's? Research points to pesticides (including near golf courses), the weed killer paraquat, and the solvent TCE (trichloroethylene) — as associations under active study.
Can lifestyle reduce Parkinson's risk or help symptoms? Exercise shows real and growing benefit for people living with Parkinson's, and reducing certain exposures (e.g., carbon water filters, air purifiers) may help — this is not medical advice.
