7 Car Brands Already Dead in Europe (Still Selling You Cars)
Some car brands disappear with a dramatic announcement. Others die quietly while the showroom lights remain on, the finance offers keep running and salespeople continue handing over keys to buyers who have no idea the support network behind the badge is already shrinking.
This video investigates seven zombie car brands still selling vehicles across Europe despite collapsing sales, reduced dealer networks, borrowed model ranges and product pipelines that are either empty or built entirely from rebadged cars supplied by another manufacturer.
Jaguar is the clearest warning. In April 2025, it sold just 49 cars across Europe, down from 1,961 during the same month a year earlier. Its existing range has been withdrawn and dealers are waiting for a promised electric luxury relaunch. Until that arrives, the brand exists commercially through used cars, Land Rover sales and a much smaller retail network.
Mitsubishi is returning to Britain, but its European range contains no independently developed models. The Colt is based on the Renault Clio, the ASX on the Captur, the Grandis on the Symbioz and the new Eclipse Cross on the Scenic. Buyers are effectively paying for Renault engineering under a Mitsubishi badge, potentially with weaker residual values.
Abarth abandoned the turbocharged petrol cars and manual gearboxes its enthusiasts loved, moving to an EV-only future built around the 500e and 600e. UK registrations collapsed, the dealer network shrank dramatically and the customer base that kept the scorpion badge alive was left without the product it actually wanted.
Lancia survives largely inside Italy with one shared-platform hatchback and vague promises of future models. DS Automobiles continues through Stellantis engineering but sells in numbers so small that its UK registrations can fall below those of a single successful dealership. Smart launched modern electric models, yet sales continued falling, proving that fresh products cannot always revive a badge buyers have already abandoned.
Maserati carries greater prestige, but declining sales and discussion of lower-cost direct retail suggest a parent company reducing its commitment rather than building for growth.
The risk to buyers is not merely theoretical. When a brand exits, used values can fall quickly, dealerships close, specialist knowledge disappears and parts become harder to source. Britain also has no law forcing manufacturers to provide spare parts for ten years. That widely repeated promise is an industry custom, not an enforceable statutory guarantee.
Before buying from a shrinking brand, check its confirmed future models, dealership closures, shared platforms, sales trajectory and written parts-support commitments. A discounted car from a dying marque can look like a bargain today and become a stranded asset before the finance agreement ends.
These seven brands may still be selling cars, but every one of them carries the same warning: an empty, borrowed or uncertain future behind the badge.
