Discover Rieux Volvestre, just under 40 minutes from Toulouse, this charming medieval village at the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains is quite a well-kept secret.
The village is small and compact, ideal for a day or a half-day with lunch in the village or a picnic alongside the little river Arize and it's easy to access all parts of the village with no high climbs nor slippery cobbles to navigate.
As you will find out from the video, it was once a very important centre in the 14th and 15th century, lying on the via Tolosana one of the pilgrim pathways to Compostelle.
There is not so much hype, and therefore less tourists here than in some of the other better-known medieval villages in the region and the place feels very laid-back.
One of my criticisms in many histotic spots in France is that there is just not enough information available for visitors.
Well, Rieux Volvestre has got this right!
There is a tourist information area as well as lots of QR codes that are all around the village that tells the visitor what to see and what not to miss in the form of a game - it really is a good initiative.
