What are we looking for when solving ABG problems? Simple - we are looking for a potential ACID BASE imbalance.      
     
On exams you will be given 3 values and you will have to determine what is going on with your patient!      
     
1️⃣ Blood pH level     
2️⃣ Carbon Dioxide (CO2)     
3️⃣ Bicarbonate (HCO3)     
     
Always remember that CO2 represents the respiratory system and HCO3 represents the metabolic system.   
     
Now this is how awesome our body is designed: When our blood pH decreases to much and we have acidosis OR increases to much where we have alkalosis - the respiratory and metabolic systems will come in to balance the blood pH to try and get it back to normal levels.      
     
✅ Always ask yourself     
     
1️⃣ Is this a Respiratory issue or Metabolic issue?      
2️⃣ Do we have a Acidosis or Alkalosis?      
3️⃣ Do we have compensation: Uncompensated, Partial, or full Compensation?      
     
✅ Normal Arterial Ranges⁣⁣⁣

*pH: 7.35 – 7.45⁣⁣⁣⁣      
Acidosis less than 7.35 & Alkalosis greater than 7.45     
     
*CO2: 35-45 mmHg⁣⁣⁣⁣     
Acidosis greater than 45 mmHg & Alkalosis less than 35 mmHg     
     
*HCO3-: 22-26 mEq/L⁣⁣⁣⁣     
Acidosis less than 22 mEq/L & Alkalosis greater than 26 mEq/L
