Official Description & Notes

The LUMINOUS Lantern Parade took over South Bank Parklands tonight, marking the official start of Multicultural Queensland Month. What began in 2007 as a small lantern walk to welcome newly arrived families now draws more than 13,000 people to the riverbank every year. Free, all ages, and run by Multicultural Australia.

THE LANTERN PARADE

🏮 The lanterns: Most are handcrafted by LightnUp Incorporated, a Lismore based artist group that specialises in outdoor fire theatre and community parades.
🚶 The walk: Parade stepped off at 6pm and moved through the parklands to Riverside Green.🎺 The concert: Byron Taiko, a Palestinian Dabke troupe, the Indangamirwa Rwandan Dancers and Mad Mariachi, with a live DJ between sets.

GOOD TO KNOW

🚘 South Bank and South Brisbane stations, the Cultural Centre busway and the CityCat all drop you within a short walk.
🎟️ Free entry, no bookings. Parade walking registrations close in early July each year.
🗓️ Regional editions are still to come in Rockhampton and on the Gold Coast on 22 August, and Toowoomba on 29 August.
