It all began in the deep heart of Algerian Raï, a genre born from rebellion, longing, and love. In the early 1980s, Cheba Fadela, one of Raï's pioneering female voices, gave life to a haunting ballad titled "Kiyti Mahlali Noum", a poetic lament crafted around the evocative words of Mustapha Ben Brahim, an Algerian poet known for his soulful verses. Fadela’s voice, layered with both pain and defiance, turned the track into a symbol of heartfelt vulnerability in North African music.

Years passed, but the spirit of the song never faded.

In 2004, the Belgian label Fassiphone, known for reviving Maghreb classics, released a fresh version, "Dana Dana", a duet between Cheb Rayan, a Moroccan artist, and Rima. Arranged by Jalal El Hamdaoui with lyrics by Abdennasser Benjelloun, this rendition retained the emotional intensity of the original while offering a modern Raï arrangement. With its widely viewed music video directed by Olivier “Saber” Rodriguez, the song became an anthem among North African youth and diasporic communities.

Fast forward to 2023, when Tunisian producer Chedly, deeply inspired by his cultural roots and the timeless beauty of regional music, discovered Dana Dana anew. Moved by the emotional core of the track, he began reimagining it for a modern audience. His approach wasn’t just to remix it, but to reinterpret it, infusing deep house and electronic textures while preserving the song’s nostalgic soul.

Chedly’s version took shape gradually, with warm synths, subtle ambient pads, and organic percussion, all carefully layered to maintain the haunting resonance of the vocals while inviting listeners to experience the song in a new light.

On May 1st, 2025, after months of careful production and with the full support of Fassiphone Music, Chedly officially released his electronic version of Dana Dana. The track is not just a standalone release, but part of his debut conceptual project titled “You Exist Through Me”, a collection of emotional and reimagined pieces inspired by his late father and MENA musical heritage.

Through this release, Chedly continues his mission of reimagining MENA musical heritage with honesty, emotion, and global resonance, proving that even the most personal of songs can find new life on the dancefloor.
