Official Description & Notes

A smoke alarm will alert you to two different things. The first is that it has detected smoke. The second is that there is an issue with the power source, either the batteries or the connection to electricity.

So, what's the difference?

If a smoke alarm is alerting you to smoke, it will make three short beeps, like those in this video. If you hear those beeps, GET OUT and STAY OUT!

If you hear a series of ongoing short chirps, this indicates that there is an issue with the power source.

Please be sure to test your smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button and be sure to replace them every 10 years (at most). The sensors inside that detect smoke particles go bad after time which is why all alarms must be replaced every seven to 10 years no matter what the power source is.

Poudre Fire Authority cannot provide assistance for smoke alarms that are hardwired (connected to your home or business' electricity). We also can only provide new alarms under very limited circumstances. They are available for purchase at most big box or hardware stores.
