"Well, I certainly hope that France's democracy can be protected in this presidential election. That Emmanuel Macron, I hope, will win against Marine Le Pen on Sunday, May 7th. Because the Fifth Republic and democracy is at stake. Marine Le Pen is a right-wing, anti-democratic populist. She would take France, she says, out of the eurozone. She questions France's involvement in the EU. She has befriended Putin. She's taken loans from Russian state banks. She's no friend to democracy. She is no friend to people of color, or Muslims, and that is a major problem because France is a multiethnic, multireligious country, just as the United States is. You can't have a leader who demonizes people who aren't of her faith and of her skin color. And so, one has to hope that the sentiment for democracy is going to win the day and now that we are down to two candidates, one would hope that all the other parties would support Emmanuel Macron and that appears to be the case."

"Well, I have been disturbed by some of the positive comments that President Trump has made about Marine Le Pen. I can't imagine any previous president in our history supporting a candidate like Marine Le Pen, saying anything positive about her. And when the president of the United States effectively intervenes in another country's election, an allies election, by making laudatory comments about one of the candidates, in this case a right-wing populist, it is highly disturbing. It confuses our allies. It convinces some Europeans that we truly don't support the European Union. This is a fundamental problem of a Trump presidency."

STORYLINE:
Veteran U.S. diplomat Nicholas Burns said Monday that French democracy was at stake in the upcoming presidential elections.
Describing Nationional Front leader Marine Le Pen as a right-wing, anti-democratic populist, Burns said "you can't have a leader who demonizes people who aren't of her faith and of her skin color."
The former U.S. Undersecretary for State and U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Burns in an Associated Press interview cited his concerns over President Donald Trump's comments supporting Le Pen's candidacy.
In an Associated Press interview at the White House, Trump said although he was not offering an endorsement, he thought Le Pen was "strongest on borders, and she's the strongest on what's been going on in France."
The May 7 French Presidential runoff will be between the far right candidate Marine Le Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron.
"And when the president of the United States effectively intervenes in another country's election, an allies election, by making laudatory comments about one of the candidates, in this case a right-wing populist, it is highly disturbing," Burns said.
