Official Description & Notes
Public Utilities Minister, Senator Robert Le Hunte, has challenged representatives of the regional telecommunications organization, CANTO, to embrace technology as a tool for development of their respective economies.
In addressing the organization’s 34th Annual General Meeting in Port of Spain, Sunday evening, Senator Le Hunte noted that most of the region, described as Small Island Developing States (SIDS), are characterised by mono-product economies. He said when diversification is discussed in the region, the focus is usually on the service industry. He reminded delegates that ICT offers tremendous potential and opportunity for diversification.
The Public Utilities Minister listed some of these as manufacturing and maintenance, cyber security, customer relations management, data base management, software development, and app creation. In said in recognition of this Trinidad and Tobago is currently developing a five-year National ICT Plan. That plan, which is currently in its consultative phase, declares a bold vision of a future, transformed through ICT and characterised by empowered people, competitive businesses and transformational government.
That vision, the Minister said, is in keeping with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, mapped out in the Government’s Vision 2030, and outlined by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Agenda, adding the National ICT Plan, signals Government’s intent to use ICT as a catalyst to work towards these goals.
In told the regional grouping the Ministry of Public Utilities and its agencies, have already embraced the mobile application technology, to the benefit of stakeholders., having launched for apps over the past three months.
Just last week, TSTT signed an MOU with iGOVtt, the state company responsible for the provision of ICT services to Government Ministries and agencies. That agreement will facilitate the adoption of TSTT’s e-Tender Software, as a service procurement portal for government projects. Its utilisation will greatly improve the transparency of the bidding process, while removing some of the barriers to inclusion that would have previously existed.
The CANTO Annual General meeting which brings together telecom representatives from its member nations throughout the region runs from February 4th – 6th at the Hyatt Regency in Port of Spain.
