Hey everyone, I'm Mike Witcher with eastTNweather.
Let's break down the weekend forecast because the timing of this weather is going to be the biggest story.
First of all... if you're heading out tonight, you're in luck. The weather is just about as good as it gets for an August evening across East Tennessee. Comfortable temperatures, low humidity, and great conditions to be outside.
Now, let's fast-forward to Saturday.
The day actually starts on a quiet note, but by late morning into the early afternoon—roughly 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—our first round of showers and thunderstorms moves through. This batch looks more like a heavy rain producer than a severe weather event, so expect periods of downpours and lightning.
After that, we should catch a break.
Then attention turns to round two, arriving after about 6 or 7 p.m. as a cold front pushes into the region.
This second wave has the better chance of producing strong to severe storms, with damaging wind gusts as the primary concern.
There's another issue we'll be watching as well.
Because many areas could pick up a good amount of rain during the first round, the Weather Prediction Center has highlighted parts of East Tennessee with a Level 2 risk for excessive rainfall, meaning localized flash flooding will be possible if storms repeatedly move over the same locations Saturday evening.
So if you see heavy rain earlier in the day, keep that in mind when the second round arrives.
By Sunday, the cold front moves through, but an upper-level trough lingers overhead. That means we'll still have a few scattered showers and thunderstorms around, although widespread severe weather isn't expected.
Looking ahead, we'll keep a chance for a few afternoon storms to begin next week before the heat starts building again. By the middle to end of the week, heat index values could once again approach 100 degrees.
So don't cancel your weekend plans... just stay flexible and keep an eye on the radar.
