I will copy-paste what I wrote about Demolition and Jean-Marc on Letterboxd after a recent rewatch of the film. I think it summarizes the importance of the movie and Jean-Marc to me more or less perfectly -

"Jean-Marc Vallee has made some amazing things for both television and the big screen. I really like Dallas Buyers Club and Wild and Big Little Lies (Season 1) and Sharp Objects are two of my favourite things on TV of all time.
But the work of his that stayed with me the most is Demolition, this little film he did, which is also his last feature film.

This film where a character lives out his daily corporate life working in an investment bank until his wife dies in a car accident (which he survives), and we see that he has all these pent-up emotions that he has never been able to express and that accident shakes him up, his years of suppressing his emotions finally get to him, and he starts taking things apart, demolishing them, as a way to let out his emotions.

I felt seen in a movie. I saw this film when I was depressed a few years back, and I felt that someone took a part of me and put it in Jake Gyllenhaal's Davis. It probably didn't make me feel any less depressed, but I surely felt at peace seeing that someone has felt what I have and they have made this art. I felt at peace knowing that all these things I have felt, like smashing the shit out of things sometimes and screaming, like feeling lonely while moving and interacting with a sea of people, someone(s) else felt this too. It wasn't just me, and it was never wrong to feel that way.

How can I ever thank Jean-Marc Vallee enough? But maybe I should try.
Jean-Marc, thank you for making me fall in love with La Boheme, thank you for introducing me to Charles Aznavour, for making me like French music, for showing how music can help heal a heart, for asserting how beautiful and important the word "fuck" is, thank you for showing there's no right or wrong way to grieve, but just, thank you for your art. I will remember it always - if it counts for anything.
